The commercial Internet was built (and branded) with the dot com domain. Over time, we have seen many new TLD (top level domains) come into being and many more are on the way. Even still, we are a dot com society and people still think dot com when they think of websites. Heck, people who don’t even have dot com domains often make simple errors when sharing their web or email address.
This is one of the reasons that the domain market is still strong. Most (not all) of the good domain names are taken. But a huge number of these are “taken” by speculators still holding out to make a buck on them. Very often you can find one of these folks eager to cash in by selling it for a reasonable price, so I would not rule out any domains just because they show up as unavailable when you are doing your research.
If you are looking to learn how to acquire or sell domains.you’ve come to the right place. There is a lot to learn, and I will share what I know based on my experiences buying and selling domains and websites over the past decade.
